Maths is an integral part of every day life. We check our change at shops and work out how expensive something will be. At the other end of the spectrum, brilliant scientists use maths to build the structures we work and live in, and even help us understand the laws of the universe.
Yew Chung International School of Shanghai's (YCIS of Shanghai) mathematics programme teaches children about numbers, shapes, spaces, measures, and the handling of data. Children are taught how to use and apply maths to tackle problems. They record what they do using mathematical language, symbols and diagrams, and explain their reasoning. And while calculators are used to solve certain problems, YCIS Shanghai wants students to depend on the computational power of their minds in most cases.
The National Numeracy Strategy Framework is used for teaching, giving detailed goals for what is taught during the daily maths lesson for all students.
