Lorenzo, Year 11, Century Park Campus
The Student Council at YCIS Shanghai is one of the core organisations of the student body. We are a student-run group set up to further enhance school life. Student Council members are elected at the beginning of each school year by their individual home rooms, and each form has a representative. As part of our responsibilities, we gather every week to plan and discuss events, and this is also a chance for the form representatives to raise the topics brought up by their classmates.
As a Council we have two main areas of focus – one is organising events and gatherings for the students and the other is promoting awareness of charities and raising funds. Throughout this school year we have arranged numerous activities for students. During the first semester, students had the opportunity to take part in dodgeball and capture the flag events as well as various free dress days. When “Movember” took place, the Council put together a bake sale in order to raise money for the Renewal Center, a local charity here in Shanghai. We also set up a Student Council bulletin board to inform the students on our campus where all the money they raise goes, and we created visual posters explaining how valuable their contributions are. This year we have also sponsored the Heart to Heart and Seeds of Hope charities.
The event which students look forward to most is the annual upper school formal. First organised on the Bund, and now held on Taikang Lu, this is an opportunity for the students in Years 10-13 to socialise together over a nice dining experience. Everyone is always enthusiastic as this is one of the occasions when they are able to dress formally.
Overall, the Student Council plays a key role within the school, and it is also a great opportunity for students to develop leadership skills.
