Early Childhood Education

Yew Chung International School of Shanghai's Early Childhood Education (ECE) programme provides a doorway through which children can acquire positive attitudes towards their outside world.

The programme was developed with guidance from the principles and practices of internationally recognised standards such as the Practice Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage from England. During early childhood, children develop key learning skills such as listening, speaking, concentration, persistence and social interaction. The school's unique blend of Western and Chinese educational philosophies are based on research and effective practices, providing a holistic approach that encompasses all areas of learning to embody each student with those skills. With focus on the child, the programme celebrates the skills and competence of children and highlights the interrelationship between growth, learning, development and the environment in which they are cared for and educated.

Areas of learning and development for the Early Years Foundation Stage are:

  • Creative development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
  • Physical development

The ECE programme aims to provide a fully-rounded education for students aged from one to five years (kindergarten 1 to 4). After completion of K4, students are carefully supported through the transition into the next phase: Year 1 of primary school.
