Mathematics

YCIS Shanghai’s Mathematics programme teaches children about numbers, shapes, spaces, measurements, and the handling of data.

Mathematics is an integral part of everyday life. We check our change at shops and work out how expensive something will be. At the other end of the spectrum, brilliant scientists use maths to build the structures we work and live in, and even help us understand the laws of the universe.

YCIS Shanghai’s Mathematics programme teaches children about numbers, shapes, spaces, measurements, and the handling of data. Children are taught how to use and apply maths to tackle problems. They record what they do using mathematical language, symbols and diagrams, and explain their reasoning. While calculators are used to solve certain problems, YCIS Shanghai teaches students to depend on the computational power of their minds in most cases.

The National Numeracy Strategy Framework is used for teaching, giving detailed goals of what is taught during the daily maths lessons for all students.
