Chinese Storytelling Competition at Hongqiao Campus

Recently, the annual Primary Chinese Storytelling Competition took place at YCIS’s Hongqiao Campus. This year, the successful competition was held over two days for two year level groups – Years 2-4 and Years 5-6. This was the first year that the competition was open to students in Year 2, and all students were very eager to have the opportunity to participate and demonstrate the language skills they have further developed in class.

First, preliminary competitions were held in classes and by year groups to determine the competitors for the final round. In the end, there were 15 Primary student candidates who participated in the main competitions in the campus auditorium. In the Year 5-6 final Chinese storytelling competition, the eight candidates thoroughly entertained an auditorium full of parents, classmates, and teachers, as well as showcased their high-level of competency in the language at both non-native and native levels. In the Year 2-4 competition, the seven young competitors demonstrated great confidence as they walked onto the stage and impressively told animated and well-prepared stories in Chinese to the nearly 300 attendees.

Enthusiasm for learning Chinese is part of daily school life at YCIS Shanghai, and all Primary and Secondary students take one hour of engaging Chinese language lessons each day where they develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
