Pi Day is an important festival in the history of maths, celebrating both the mathematical term pi and Albert Einstein’s birthday. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14. At YCIS, we learnt about pi and held a pie competition and tasting to celebrate Pi Day.

So, what is pi? Pi is the numerical value of the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter (3.1415926…). Pi is irrational and is a Greek letter (π). William Jones first used it in 1706. It’s useful in geometry, like when you’re trying to find the area of a circle.

Having learnt so much about pi, I was thinking about the pie I would make for the pie competition. An apple pie would be good; a chocolate pie would be even better. But there was one problem, how was I going to make a pie without an oven? Fortunately, my Maths teacher, Ms Towle, gave me a recipe to make a piecrust without an oven (Bless you Ms Towle)! Under my mom’s watchful eyes, I made the pie.

On the day of the competition, we brought our pies in during community time and presented them. Everybody tasted a bit of pie, and the experience was a great way to learn about pi and celebrate Pi Day.
