Music at YCIS Shanghai is a significant and vibrant part of the Primary curriculum.
It is a necessary platform for the development of skills required in Secondary section; thus, it is studied by all Primary students from Years 1 through 6.
The multi-faceted programme opens the student's ears to many different types of music while concurrently developing their technical music skills. The Primary Music programme is two-fold:
- It is studied by all children as part of weekly class lesson(s);
- There are also optional after-school Music programmes.
The general Music curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England and is centred on three fundamental areas: listening, composing and performing. Additionally, students at YCIS Shanghai study a variety of music including Chinese and Western classical music and instruments, and the recorder.
Students in Years 1 to 3 take part in YCIS Shanghai's unique violin programme. Taught under specialist instruction, children learn to master the strings and ultimately show their skills in high-profile school music concerts. Learning an instrument helps students develop important motor and interdisciplinary skills.
