I am currently a Year 12 student at YCIS and I constantly participate in school sports. Throughout the year, I play volleyball, basketball, touch rugby, and football, all of which are team sports. There are heaps of reasons why I love playing on a team; the main ones are that it helps me make friends with students from different year levels, it helps improve my athletic skills, and it develops my leadership skills.

There are students from all year levels who participate in sports at YCIS, and I form friendships with students in many different year groups. Overall this makes me better acquainted with people in my school, and it also means that I can be a positive role model and mentor to my younger classmates. Furthermore, by having these students on a team with me, I improve my skills more than I would if I were playing a sport individually. My teammates each have their own knowledge and experiences with the sport, which they can pass onto me. This is very helpful when you are trying to improve your skills in a particular area.

Our coaches are also another important aspect of the team experience. Coaches are essential to helping us build our skills and confidence, and they make the sport much more enjoyable. All of my coaches throughout the years have had immense knowledge, and have helped our teams reach their full potential. Our coaches understand the personalities of our teams and players, and know how to use those for the best outcome.

Finally, I have bettered my leadership skills because of team sports at YCIS. When there is someone on my team who is younger or less experienced than me, I am able to share my knowledge with them, which is very rewarding. I remember when I was younger, I watched the seniors with awe and knew that one day I would like to be like them – enthusiastic about playing sport and a positive role model for younger students. That’s what I hope I’m now doing as I work on teams with younger students, who in turn will take on the same role in years to come.

And that is why I love playing on the teams at YCIS! There are amazing coaches, incredible teammates, and new skills to be learnt every practice and game!
