    Secondary

    A whole-student approach to curriculum.

On their path to university, YCIS secondary students journey through The Yew Chung Curriculum” – a bilingual, international curriculum written by experts from the Curriculum and Professional Development Division (Years 7 -9), the International General Certificate of International Education (IGCSE) Programme (Years 10-11), and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) (Years 12-13), or the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination Programme (Years 10-13).

At YCIS Shanghai, our international Secondary programme enables all students to reach for and fulfil their highest academic potential in conjunction with their social, moral, cultural, physical, and creative development. Our Secondary curriculum aims to prepare students for the future: providing them with opportunities to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible global citizens, and caring contributors.

    • Global Education at YCIS

YCIS Shanghai students are educated through a research-based international curriculum that merges the best of Eastern and Western knowledge and perspectives; and provides students with an authentic immersion into Chinese culture within an international school framework. This allows us to approach study projects from a global perspective, foster cultural respect, and develop fluency in two major world languages of the 21st century - English and Chinese.

We also place great value on students' character development and provide them with a wide range of opportunities in the areas of art, music, sports, charity, and leadership. We pride ourselves on preparing our students to become adaptable enquirers and multilingual global citizens who are ready to take on positions of leadership within society.

    • Re-thinking and Re-imagining Schooling

YCIS Shanghai is re-thinking and re-imagining schooling to better provide for the students of the connected generation - to equip each one for the demands of study and work that awaits them. We are also changing the way in which teachers and students connect, share, and create.

We already have a proven track record of excellent educational results in both the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Moreover, our students go on to study at top universities across the world, including:

      • University of Oxford
      • University of Cambridge
      • University College London
      • Cornell University

      • Rhode Island School of Design
      • Yonsei University
      • Seoul National University

The curriculum for our Years 7-9 students is our own YCIS framework based on internationally recognised learning standards from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Australia. The curriculum is aligned with best educational practices and tailored specifically to our international context, with an extended focus on Chinese language, global citizenship, international-mindedness, character education, and the arts. Our holistic international education is designed to nurture and prepare our middle school students with the knowledge, skills, concepts, and understanding aimed towards becoming caring global citizens. These important years fully prepare students both academically and socially for the increasing challenges of the Upper Secondary years to follow.

    • Chinese Language and Studies Programme

In YCIS's globally recognised Chinese Language and Culture Studies Programme, all students' language and cultural competency skills are heightened and refined. Our Chinese Language courses are divided into two sections: Chinese as an Additional Language (CAL) and Chinese as a First Language (CFL). Students are grouped into different classes according to their language background and their particular needs, helping them to develop their abilities in Mandarin Chinese to a greater extent during their daily language lessons. Furthermore, Secondary students deepen their connection with the culture of their host country while participating in regular cultural activities and their weekly Chinese Culture Studies courses.

    • Character Education

The Character Education programme for students in Years 7-9 helps foster positive values and principles and educates the whole child. Through lessons and a wide range of activities, students gain practical knowledge and skills to help them live healthy lives and learn to manage any moral, social, and cultural challenges that they may face as they approach adulthood.

    • Art Programme

At YCIS, we believe that art and culture should play an essential role in the lives of our students, both inside and outside our classrooms. Through our Secondary Art courses, students become knowledgeable about different materials, processes, and practices. They also engage confidently with art, craft, and design, both from the contemporary world as well as different cultures and periods of history.

    • Music and Drama

In our Performing Arts programmes, our Years 7-9 Secondary students focus on listening, performing, and creating. They are encouraged to discern music from different styles, genres, and parts of the world. Throughout the year, YCIS students participate in a wide range of music and drama activities and learn to evaluate their own and others' contributions. Our students are encouraged to work both individually and in groups, with the aim of gaining confidence as creators and performers. Our Secondary campuses also offer a wide range of opportunities for Performing Arts as Co-Curricular Activities, including: instrumental and vocal ensembles, orchestras, rock bands, recitals, as well as plays and musical theatre productions.

    • Physical Education and Sports

In our Physical Education (PE) course in Secondary, learning areas are interrelated and contribute to the development of healthy, active lifestyles for students. They also build interpersonal skills such as communication and conflict resolution, and decision-making skills’ tactics and strategies. Our Secondary campuses also offer a wide range of sports teams, and students can compete in leagues against other international schools, both locally and across China.

    • Trips and Excursions

In addition to regularly scheduled class field trips, YCIS students in Years 7-9 travel to key cultural areas in China through our Education Outside of the Classroom (EOTC) programme. The EOTC helps students gain cultural appreciation through trips to different regions in China, with recent locations including Xi'an, Shandong, and Fujian.

More than just school trips, EOTC trips help to broaden YCIS students' understanding of their host country and lead to increased cultural respect, while also helping students to develop a sense of purpose and perspective in their own lives. As YCIS, students learn Chinese language daily in class; these real language and cultural experiences are essential to helping them apply and reinforce their well-rounded education. These trips also include learning activities that reinforce and extend skills and concepts from our Lower Secondary curriculum.

In Years 10 and 11, students work towards completing a learning programme based on the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). This qualification is the most popular international certificate worldwide for this age group and is administered by Cambridge Assessment International Education.

Students are required to choose at least one course in the five major subject areas: Languages, Humanities, Sciences, Mathematics, and Creative, Technical, and Vocational Studies. Students must take at least seven subjects, although they can take up to 12. Most students at YCIS will take nine IGCSE courses.

The breadth of the programme allows it to cater for different ability levels and student interests. IGCSE success can be achieved through various ongoing assessments for coursework, oral communication, and final examinations.

YCIS students who undertake the IGCSE programme of learning are recognised internationally for their problem-solving abilities, investigative skills, and their capability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Year after year, YCIS Shanghai students have earned "Top in World" and "Top in China" IGCSE awards.

    • Chinese Language and Culture Studies Programme

All IGCSE students at YCIS take one class period of Chinese language lessons daily, tailored to their ability. In these high school years, classes focus on high-level vocabulary and topics, such as global issues. Our students also participate in a variety of Chinese cultural events throughout the year and are encouraged to engage deeply with the local Shanghai community.

IGCSE students have an abundance of community service opportunities and take educational and service trips within China. In Years 10-11, many of our students embark on a visit to one of our Seeds of Hope Schools - local Primary schools located in small, rural villages in regions throughout China which are supported by the YCIS charity programme - in order to complete service and volunteer projects in the classrooms.
