China is, in fact, a collection of the traditions and practices of more than 50 minority groups that make up the country’s population. So when it came time to welcome the much anticipated Year of the Dragon, in late January, YCIS Shanghai’s Chinese teachers helped students prepare a full range of celebrations that are fun, meaningful and informative, and able to reflect the ethnical diversity of China. 

The classrooms and hallways were once again decorated in red and gold to set the festive atmosphere that defines the occasion. A fashion show of traditional garments by the students and teachers highlighted the regional differences between the Chinese qi pao, chang shan and ma gua, and then students performed the northern and southern styles of martial arts. Stations were set up for attendees to try their hand at traditional Chinese activities, including writing couplets on red banners that are posted on classroom doors to bring luck in the New Year. 

The day’s events supported YCIS’ East-meets-West philosophy of respect and appreciation for different cultures.
