    • This is the second feature in our "Scholarship Recipient Interview Series".

Today, we share the stories of Jerry and Amelia — two students who have found their own balance between music, academics, sport, and community service. Through perseverance, exploration, and moments of breakthrough, they continue to gather the confidence and strength that comes from walking their own paths.

In the future, we will continue to share the journey of our scholarship recipients, so that more stories of passion, perseverance, and growth can be seen.

    • Amelia | Quiet Strength, All-Round Excellence

Amelia is known among her peers as someone who is quiet yet deeply influential. She leads not by volume but by presence—steadily supporting the team at crucial moments, and living up to her own definition of leadership.

A top student in her year, Amelia combines outstanding academic results with well-rounded capabilities. She has a particular passion for logical subjects like mathematics, physics, and chemistry, fascinated by the patterns and principles that govern how the world works.

Outside the classroom, Amelia is actively involved in diverse community projects.

In the ShareBear initiative, she transforms old school uniforms into handmade bears for charity sales, stitching together threads of sustainability and kindness.

As a volunteer teacher at a school for the children of migrant workers, she offers regular English tutoring to help bridge gaps in learning.

On the TEDx stage, she delivered a talk titled "Do Sustainable Products Actually Make a Difference?" where she boldly questioned the environmental contradictions behind the bike-sharing boom: “Many companies wave the green flag, yet ignore the mountains of abandoned bikes they leave behind. Sustainability should not be a mere slogan.”

The experience not only helped her overcome a fear of public speaking but also showcased her sharp insight into social issues.

Amelia also knows how to find stillness amid a busy life. She enjoys chats with friends in cafés or the freedom of cycling alone with the wind.

She reflects on a formative memory: "As a child, I was made to learn ballet at my mother’s insistence, though I didn’t enjoy it. I envied my brothers as they played football — so eventually I convinced my family to let me train in football too."

That experience taught her to break through gender stereotypes and find balance between movement and quiet.

Today, this balance defines her approach — whether she is recording data in the lab, guiding younger students in class, or speaking with clarity on stage, Amelia’s steady commitment allows each effort to grow into something meaningful.

"Leadership is a light in the dark; failure is a poem of growth." Amelia lives these words — when she examines the dilemmas of shared bikes on stage, helps children understand English one word at a time, or patiently tests a chemical equation, her quiet resolve is already illuminating a wider world.

    • Jerry | Strength Through Variety

Where Amelia’s story conveys a steady inner strength, Jerry’s path radiates youthful energy and vitality.

Jerry’s journey with music began in Year 1, with violin lessons twice a week. "I was fascinated that four strings could produce such beautiful sounds," he recalls.

His passion has been reflected in his disciplined schedule: "Every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and on weekends, I practise the violin without fail."

That dedication has brought him to many prestigious stages at home and abroad. Selected as one of just 12 YCIS students, he once performed as a second violinist at Vienna’s world-famous Golden Hall. “That hall usually hosts only professional groups. To be chosen through an audition filled me with pride and excitement.”

In May, Jerry performed at the ‘Summer Overture’ concert at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center. There, he played in the senior orchestra, the chamber string ensemble, and the joint performance with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra — as first violinist in each. “The concert hall was magnificent, and with just seven of us in the ensemble, playing in such a vast space was truly special.”

Sharing the stage with professionals proved invaluable: “My partner was a professional violinist who taught me how to use different bowing techniques to interpret phrases — I learned so many details I hadn’t encountered before.”

Beyond music, Jerry shines in sport. With nearly four years of golf experience, he has earned impressive results through precision and dedication. On the football pitch and athletics track, he pours his passion into teamwork.

As a key member of the Pudong handball, football, and athletics teams, Jerry frequently competes at various tournaments.

At the YCYW School Games this year, he helped his team win silver in handball, silver in the 4x100m relay, and demonstrated excellent tactical awareness in football. "Sport helps me make new friends, and the joy of teamwork keeps me motivated."

Balancing academics, music, and sport has helped Jerry build excellent time management skills. He not only plans his own schedule carefully but also helps his younger brother with homework and piano practice — becoming his brother’s mentor at home.

Whether deepening his musical talent or exploring the world of sport, Jerry is steadily building a foundation of skill and experience for the future.

Jerry and Amelia — one constantly challenging himself on stage and on the field, the other steadily growing through thoughtful leadership and reflection — embody the holistic development and inner growth that YCIS champions. Whether under the spotlight or in quiet, unseen moments of effort, both are laying the foundations for their future potential in their own unique ways.

Their stories remind us that what truly moves us is not a fleeting moment of glory, but the consistent dedication and authenticity they show in everything they do.
