Perhaps I am not the best person to tell you how to deal with being homesick, considering the fact that I was born in Shanghai and have never lived anywhere else. However, I think this gives me the advantage of knowing how to enjoy the city to its fullest, so let me try.
I understand that people may feel overwhelmed when they move to Shanghai — by the tall buildings, the number of people everywhere, and maybe the lack of Chinese speaking skills when they first arrive. So, after you get a bit settled in a bit, try to learn some Chinese! You can find peace of mind in knowing that you’ll have daily Chinese lessons at YCIS to help you get up to speed! This will also help you during your time here as there is something completely different in the way that you experience the city and the people when you speak the language. Everyone here is so friendly and you would be surprised at how many hilarious and interesting conversations you can have with complete strangers. So, if you find yourself with some spare time at the end of the day, I would highly recommend focusing on developing your Chinese language skills.
Another tip is to simply go outside and explore the city. So, be sure to head out for some fun adventures with your new friends and your family! The sooner you get to know the city and find the things you love about it, the sooner you’ll feel more at home. You don’t need to go to all of the tourist spots right away (just because everyone says you must go to Lujiazui or Xintiandi, does not mean it needs to become your new favourite spot). Instead, try to look for places that offer activities that you already like. Finding a place to practise your hobbies can definitely give you a sense of familiarity and comfort in an unfamiliar place. So, if you haven't already done so, get out and about in Shanghai!
I hope these suggestions will help at least a bit. It’s great to try your best to enjoy Shanghai and appreciate where you are, and I hope you like living here as much as I do!
