October 13th was a very special day at Yew Chung campuses worldwide as the school celebrated its 85th Anniversary during the annual ‘Founder’s Day’ event. The Founder’s Day is an important part of the YCIS calendar, with a day full of activities for students as well as reflection and appreciation for the establishment of the school by Madam Tsang Chor-hang in 1932 in Hong Kong.
The annual Founder’s Day celebration also brings the greater YCIS family together, including all YCIS campuses in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Qingdao, Chongqing, and Silicon Valley (US), through a live video broadcast highlighting the celebrations at each location, and includes an inspiring speech from Dr Betty Chan, CEO & School Supervisor, and the daughter of Madam Tsang.
At the Regency Park Campus, the Early Childhood Education (ECE) children began the day with a Founder’s Day Run on the sports field, with parents and classmates on hand to cheer on each runner. Later, the children decorated and ate some delicious little cakes to celebrate the birthday of their school. The Primary students at the campus where joined by Year 6 students from Century Park Campus and all took part in their own Founder’s Day Run with their parents cheering them on from the sidelines. A highlight was the annual student versus staff football match which took place on the campus’ sports field.
At the Century Park Campus, the day kicked off with House Competitions, including a cup “speed stacking competition” which students had been practising for all week. Then, all students and staff gathered in the campus’ theatre to participate in the live feed with the YCIS community from all over the world. The main event of the day was the traditional Founder’s Day Run through beautiful Century Park, which is located close to the campus. Afterward, students and staff enjoyed a picnic in the park and then returned to school for a medal and awards ceremony. A highlight of the day at both campuses in Pudong was introducing the new Student Council leaders to the whole student community.
At the Hongqiao Campus, the day included a variety of fun activities for students, including parachute play, a water relay, a ‘musical statues’ game, and other team games including Dodgeball, as well as a whole school picnic. The day was capped off with an ice cream treat for the students, which everyone enjoyed!
Students and staff at the Gubei Campus started the day with a very active ‘Tug of War’ with “House Teams”, which resulted in a very colourful scene on the field. During the live feed, four Gubei Campus student representatives offered greetings and well wishes on behalf of YCIS Shanghai, with a number of students on hand to wave to the YCIS community around the globe. Later, the students participated in a range of sports and group events, including a collaborative dance activity that was a particularly fun way for the students to bond during this important day.
