Why We Still Believe in the Power of Sport?

    • Every four years, the World Cup brings the world to a standstill.

People stay up late to watch, cheering goals, lamenting mistakes, and shedding tears over moments of sheer perseverance.

Some remember the glory; others, the legends.

But what truly defines the World Cup has never been just about winning or losing.

It's the team that keeps attacking when they're behind; the respect shown in a handshake after the final whistle; the tears of defeat, and the courage to start again.

Perhaps this is the very essence of sport.

And it is exactly why, at YCIS Shanghai, we continue to believe in its power.

    • A Pitch for Every Child

At YCIS, sport is not reserved for a select few.

From PE lessons and House events to CCAs and varsity training, right through to international competitions like SISAC, ACAMIS, and FOBISIA, students of all ages, abilities, and interests can find their place.

Some try a sport for the first time; others discover a passion through a single challenge; and some take their first steps on the school pitch and go on to represent us on a much bigger stage.

For us, sport is not just about producing elite athletes. It is about helping every student find joy, build confidence, and grow.

Levona, a member of the Class of 2025 and vice-captain of the D1 volleyball team, never saw herself as a "sporty" child. But, encouraged by her teachers and friends, she decided to give it a go.

    • From Campus to International Arenas: Limitless Potential

Over the past year, our students have competed in football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, athletics, ultimate frisbee, and triathlon.

In tournaments such as ACAMIS, SISAC, and the YCYW School Games, they have continually pushed their boundaries and earned collective pride.

Multiple podium finishes for staff and students in triathlon events

Notably, our triathlon programme has grown from just two participating teachers into a community initiative involving around 50 students, alongside numerous parents and staff.

Alongside this, we partner with professional bodies to provide high-quality coaching, ensuring continuous development for students of all ages.

    • A Sporting Culture Woven into School Life

Medals and results are worth celebrating, but the most memorable moments often happen beyond the scoreboard.

Sport isn't just about match day.

It lives on the bustling pitches at lunchtime; in the floodlit sports hall after school; in the cheers echoing during House competitions; and on the journeys to ACAMIS and SISAC fixtures.

For many of our students, sport offers far more than just results.

The World Cup will eventually come to an end.

The cheers will fade, and new legends will be written.

But here at YCIS Shanghai, our belief in the power of sport remains steadfast.

Because what is truly valuable isn't just the trophies or the scorelines.

It is the chance, found in every sprint, pass, leap, and cheer, for every child to discover a passion, test their limits, and move forward side by side with others.
