Anna, Year 10, Century Park Campus

At Century Park Campus, we put on drama productions with a relatively small cast. When I was in Year 8, we put on the 70’s musical Godspell, which was a great play for our school for a number of reasons.

For one, the casting is very flexible--the character you play is really a dramatised version of yourself, and lines can be switched between roles, so there wasn’t really any strain on anyone in the cast. Also, because of the adaptable nature of the characters, it was a great play for novice actors like myself. The best part of the play by far, though, was just how fun it was to practise. The play itself is really funny, and the 10 of us in the cast became like a family. Godspell rehearsal quickly became the highlight of my week!

Leading up to the performance dates we decided to start practising on Saturdays. We’d come to school at 11 a.m. and break for lunch at around 1 p.m. We would then get pizza down the road from school and have such a good time together.

When we finally ran onstage together for the first time in front of an audience, I experienced a fascinating kind of joy. It was the beginnings of my love for performance, but mostly, it was the wonderful feeling of having come together with other YCIS students and creating something we all loved so much.
