    • Year 12 Students at YCIS’s Gubei Campus were recently treated to mentoring sessions by one of the UK’s foremost experts and practitioners in art and design, Mr. Ian Murphy.  Murphy specialises in fine art, with a focus on mixed materials in the production of his works. Many of his pieces feature drawing, oil painting, and experimental layering utilising a laser cutting machine. Additionally, Murphy has had his expertise and opinion sought and referenced by such institutions as the BBC, the National Society for Education in Art & Design, and the British Council. Murphy normally supports workshops for teachers, and so it was an incredible opportunity for the students to receive mentoring from him in the classroom for three days.

Murphy’s art centers around his take on urban and natural environments in global locales, with some of his most prolific work based on scenes in China. Throughout his time on campus, he shared with the students about his approach of illustrating the historical depth of a piece of art through techniques of layering and laser cutting in his sketches and paintings. During one of the hands-on lessons with the students, Murphy and YCIS Head of Visual Arts, Martin Cockram, directed students in the use of a state of the art laser cutter while simultaneously using a computer programme called Corel Draw to input design instructions into the machine.

Inviting professional artists to campus to share about their experience and provide unique learning sessions is just one aspect of the robust art programme for high school students at YCIS Shanghai. With a focus on helping Secondary students develop their own unique skill sets within the discipline, YCIS helps students learn to express themselves through art.
